Hold Nebraska’s elected officials accountable to state law.
Nebraska’s elected officials oversee the important infrastructure of our state and have a tremendous impact on the day-to-day lives of average people. Unfortunately, all-too-often those in power abuse the public trust and overstep the boundaries of their roles ethically and legally. The Attorney General has broad discretion to investigate these situations when they arise and hold those in power accountable to the same laws that the rest of us follow.
Give Nebraskans access to the workings of state government.
State law guarantees every citizen of Nebraska the right to access our government’s records and meetings. While much of this transparency is accomplished by the individual boards, councils, and offices that make up state governance, the Attorney General plays an important role in protecting these rights when questions regarding access and reasonable cost arise.
Protect Nebraskans’ constitutional right to access the ballot.
The Nebraska constitution gives broad protection to the citizens’ right to vote without impediment. (see Neb. Const. art. I, sec. 22). Recently, there have been efforts to add an exception to those broad protections for an ID requirement at the polls. This would permit the state to further restrict the freedom of eligible voters to access the ballot. Despite a lack of evidence, claims of widespread voter fraud continue to plague the discussion around voting in our state.
